It was outstanding news to hear today from the Australian Prime Minister Hon Anthony Albanese & Minister for Health Hon Mark Butler that the Federal Government would provide further support of brain cancer research.

The team funded by the Federal Government will be based at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and The University of Sydney.

Brain cancer is the commonest cause of death from cancer in people <40 years old in our country. Less than 5% of patients with some types of brain cancer survive 3 years and this hasn’t changed in >20 years. We have to change this and deliver on our goals of achieving zero brain cancer deaths and improve patient quality of life.

Prof Chris O’Brien AO was an inspiring, dedicated and brilliant clinician, educator & researcher. Early in my career, Chris and I co-authored some important research publications and worked together on clinical care of patients and junior staff education. Chris’ knowledge, dedication and compassion inspired me from our first interactions in 1998 and have been with me ever since. When Chris was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2006, it shocked and saddened everyone at RPAH & beyond. But in the years after his diagnosis came to light, Chris continued to impact the community with his determination, courage, communication and talent. He was a wonderful human being who inspired a generation of people. Chris O’Brien still inspires me as I fight my own battle with brain cancer.

Until recently, treatment options were very limited for patients with advanced EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), whose cancer progressed after other treatments. Results from a new phase II clinical trial involving Chris O’Brien Lifehouse lung cancer specialist, Associate Professor Steven Kao, are offering additional hope to these patients, with a new drug (patritumab deruxtecan) demonstrating meaningful efficacy. The recent publication in the Journal of Clinical Oncology identified that this new drug may become a standard therapy for lung cancer in the future, with definitive phase III trials already underway.

Chris O'Brien Lifehouse welcomes the Australian Government’s announcement of this year’s recipients in the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) scheme. Head and Neck Surgeon and University of Sydney (@Sydney_Uni ) Professor Jonathan Clark AM (@jcBeyond5) received $2.5 million from The National Health and Medical Research Council (@nhmrc) to launch The Centre of Research Excellence for Applied Innovations in Oral Cancer.

The Centre of Research Excellence grant recognises the contribution Professor Clark's team is making to oral cancer research. There are three components to the program that they applied with:

1.Trying to reduce the effects of radical surgery on young patients by identifying different approaches, which ultimately aims to avoid these intrusive surgeries and their associated side effects. Understanding ‘why is the incidence of oral cancer rising in young patients?’ and identify drugs that may be a suitable alternative.

2.Using reconstructive surgery to improve the form and function of patients following radical surgery, so they can reduce side effects and return to productive lives sooner.

3.Using tissue engineering approaches to avoid the need for transferring patient’s own bone during jaw reconstruction.

“I think this is about recognising the contribution that our team is making to the quality of life for patients who have cancer in their mouth. Also, it’s showing the importance of multiple institutions working collaboratively together to achieve better outcomes for our patients… It’s an enabling grant that will help us to get other grants in the future also”. Today we had the honour of hosting The Hon. Chris Minns, (@ChrisMinnsMP) Premier of New South Wales, and The Hon. Ryan Park (@RyanPark_Keira), NSW Minister for Health to showcase our clinical, research, and holistic facilities. Throughout the tour, the Premier and Minister for Health were able to learn more about the comprehensive services that we offer here, and see firsthand the groundbreaking work being accomplished at our Integrated Prosthetics Reconstruction Lab, and the Arto Hardy Family Biomedical Innovation Hub. We’re grateful for the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with our healthcare leaders, and look for ways that we can work together and enable greater collaboration in the future.
