Still wrapping my head around Fernando Mendoza winning the Heisman. A Cuban-American from Miami.

I grew up in the same area. Cuban kids might become baseball prospects, but no one expects anyone to accomplish anything in football.

When I covered high school football in South Florida, seeing a kid who could play but had a Hispanic last name automatically made you think, oh, nice high school player, not really a legit college football recruit. Shoot, that probably sums up Mendoza’s own recruitment.

He didn’t only find success in college. He won the most prestigious individual award.

This is potentially groundbreaking for future Hispanic/Latino athletes with football aspirations.
