On June 26, 1940 — while Jews across Europe were already being hunted — one American bureaucrat decided the greatest threat was letting too many of them escape.

Assistant Secretary of State Breckinridge Long instructed U.S. consuls worldwide:

“Put every obstacle in the way” and “postpone and postpone and postpone the granting of visas” to Jewish refugees.

His explicit goal: “delay and effectively stop” their entry into the United States for an indefinite period.

Driven by nativism, antisemitism, and paranoia about spies, Long’s policies left Jewish immigration quotas largely unfilled. Historians estimate that up to 190,000 more Jews could have reached safety if America had simply used the visas it already had.

Breckinridge Long didn’t build the gas chambers.

He just made sure the door to safety stayed closed — one postponed visa at a time.

The only spark of light shining from this story: the Palestinian flag is no longer provocative --those who carry it are saying innocently: we are just useful idiots following the mob, mumble slogans we don't understand. Israeli flags are provocative; they convey meaning and commitment to side with the underdogs, thus bordering on the revolutionary -- FIFA officials should be concerned.
