Look closely at the crowd outside Eros Cinema. White shirts, white kurtas, dhotis and light-coloured clothing dominate the frame. Even office-goers mostly wore white shirts with dark or grey trousers.

Colourful clothing had not yet become an everyday fashion statement in Bombay.

And right in the middle of it all, a BEST double-decker on a Daimler chassis.

When Concorde came to Mumbai ✈️

This incredible photograph captures Concorde approaching Santa Cruz Airport, Mumbai, in June 1972.

Concorde 002, the British-French supersonic airliner prototype, had flown from Bahrain to Mumbai as part of its global demonstration and sales tour.

The flight was meant to showcase a future where London could be reached in just a few hours. Concorde even made a stop in Mumbai as the manufacturers hoped Air India might consider buying the aircraft.

Air India ultimately said no, with its officials reportedly questioning the aircraft’s long-term economics.

And this wasn’t CSMIA.
This was Mumbai’s old Santa Cruz Airport, 1972.

There are also stories that after leaving Mumbai, Concorde’s low-altitude flight over the Kolhapur region caused sonic effects that reportedly broke windows. The story is fascinating, but contemporary documentation for this particular incident remains elusive.

Before Mumbai had Instagram, it had a photography society.

On World Photography Day, here’s a little-known Mumbai fact:

The Photographic Society of Bombay was founded in 1854, just 15 years after photography was introduced to the world.

By 1856, it had around 200 members.

Mumbai was already photographing its streets, buildings and people while photography itself was still in its infancy.
