Cannons Wood started strong, creating several clear chances but wasteful finishing kept us level. We struggled to find rhythm in the first half and were second best for large spells.

After the break, Cannons struck first through Mahein Zaman but the response was immediate. The boys shifted gears, moving the ball quickly and with purpose. Patino broke through on goal before being brought down, Naim coolly dispatched the penalty to equalise.

Moments later, Thiago produced a sublime outside of the foot pass to release Naim, who timed his run perfectly and slotted home for his brace. That’s 5 goals and 2 assists in 9 games, despite only 5 starts.

Naim then turned provider, feeding 17-year-old Adam Stephens who beat his man and scored his first senior goal for the club, a proud milestone.

It’s all over here and what a contrast between the two halves! The second half had so much more energy than the first, with the boys really working hard and showing what they’re about. Michael picked out young gem Adam with a worldie of a pass, Adam brought it down brilliantly but just couldn’t find the finish.

We were then reduced to 10 men for the final 20 minutes after Zivonimir picked up a second yellow. But straight after, from a corner, the ball fell to Naim who stayed composed and smashed it past the keeper to keep up his goalscoring form.

With 10 minutes left, Newbury hit back, the ball came off the bar and they were quickest to react, tapping it in for the equaliser. It ended all square in a game that really could have gone either way. We wish Newbury all the best for the rest of the season!

Full-time here at New River Stadium and what a game it was! We got off to the perfect start with an early strike from Naim, who was outstanding all game and worked tirelessly to set the tone. Lymore pulled one back through an unfortunate own goal, and at half-time it was all square.

The second half brought drama as Ilyas Sheikh saw red for a last-man challenge, leaving us with ten men for over 20 minutes. But the boys showed discipline, grit and heart by sticking to the plan and digging deep.

And then came the winner, Mo Mahmoud standing up to the centre back, driving past him with confidence and smashing home a brilliant finish into the bottom corner. Pure class! A huge result at home to kick off our season at New River! 🔵🔴

We hit Burnham on the counter, Ismael threads him through and Naim’s pace is unstoppable as he races clear. One on one with the keeper, he stays composed and finesses it into the bottom right!

His first goal for the club, fully deserved after a tireless performance! 🎯

We opened the scoring before the opposition hit back with two goals but the boys showed great character to level it at 2–2. Both teams had strong spells, and it proved to be a competitive and entertaining game throughout.

Our thanks go to @westessexfc for making the friendly trip, the match gave us the chance to give minutes to players who haven’t featured yet, including eight new players who all impressed against higher-level opposition.

Both sides can take real positives from the performance and we wish West Essex every success for the season ahead 👋
