Albanian ethnonym as ethnic group first clear in 11th c. Byzantine sources (Attaleiates, Arbanitai ~1079; possible ~1000 Bulgarian text). Ancient Albanoi (Ptolemy, 2nd c.) names an Illyrian tribe. Explicit medieval Albanian identity thus postdates documented Serbian.
