I recently received a card painted by a child. It shows a country road with whitewashed houses and leafy trees. The houses are flat white squares, the trees scrolling lines of ink, the shrubbery smears of yellow paint. Yet the view seizes me; I know this place.

Take another look at Louis Kahn's travel sketches, which have a raw physical energy. It's as if he is purposefully suspending the rules of drawing to reach what is there. For those entrenched in the conventions, that freedom is especially sweet.

"The Line" (https://t.co/WinF35KmzZ), a 110-mile long new horizontal skyscraper planned for the desert in Saudi Arabia, has generated plenty of snark. Though its marketing highlights technology and sustainability, it is essentially a super-big super-luxury condominium.

In contrast, she points to utopian horizontal tower projects from #Superstudio and #Archigram. These imagined cities, which never tangled with the realities of real-world design, remain fanciful, joyful, and forward-looking.

It's de rigeur for luxury brands to offer art as part of their public programs. In Paris Fondation Louis Vuitton and Bourse de Commerce (Kering) are must-sees. But the sweetest is Fondation Cartier. The glassy, classy gallery by Jean Nouvel is a lively hyper-modern home for art.

A glass box with a flat, mute facade, it offers: complexly and quietly layered views, a discrete street presence, mounumental and flexible galleries, dancing exterior elevators, and a sandy yard in back for contemplation (and coffee). Decades old, the building still feels fresh.
