On This Day in U2 History — May 25, 1978

Exactly 48 years ago, Paul McGuinness walked into Dublin’s Project Arts Centre and saw a young band then called The Hype.

That night changed everything. McGuinness agreed to manage them shortly after, becoming the architect of their global success and the unofficial “fifth member” for over 35 years.

In his memoir, Bono writes: “There would be no part of our life Paul would not shape, becoming the most critical of allies, even if it did not always feel that way.”

Though McGuinness was not a Christian, he deeply respected the faith of Bono, The Edge, and Larry. So when the band considered quitting music altogether because of their beliefs just before the October tour, McGuinness delivered one of his classic dry remarks: “If God had something to say about this tour, he should have raised his hand a bit earlier.”

Luckily, McGuinness convinced U2 to do the tour and not break up, arguing: “How could it be possible for this God of yours to want you to break the law and not fulfill your responsibilities to do this tour?”

Thank God for Paul McGuinness!
