I used to work in AI. Now I make jewelry.
It may sound like a strange transition, but to me, they’re connected.
AI is changing how we think, work, and create.
And the more powerful technology becomes, the more interested I am in what remains deeply human:
emotion, thought, the body, nature, and our place in the universe.
That became the idea behind Philip & Sophia Atelier.
Five Spaces. One Life.
Jewelry as a small, wearable reminder to return to ourselves.
Does consciousness need a self?
A thought appears.
A sound is heard.
A feeling arises.
But does there always need to be a “me” experiencing it?
Can there be awareness
without a sense of self?
#Consciousness#Philosophy
Is consciousness personal?
I know that I am “me.”
I have my memories, my thoughts, my history, my sense of self.
But is this self-awareness the same as consciousness itself?
If the story of “me” became quiet for a moment—
my name, my roles, my memories, my identity—
would consciousness still remain?
And if it did,
would it still be “mine”?

Why do we experience ourselves as separate?
You’re sitting across from someone you love.
They smile, and something changes in you.
They become anxious, and your body tightens too.
No words are needed.
We think of ourselves as separate individuals—
my mind, my body, my experience.
But in ordinary life, the boundary can feel surprisingly porous.
So where does “me” actually end,
and “you” begin?
#Consciousness #Philosophy #Self
Why do we experience ourselves as separate?
There is “me.”
And there is “the world.”
But where does that division come from?
From the body?
From the brain?
From language?
From memory?
If consciousness is connected to everything we experience, why does it feel like it belongs to one individual self?
#Consciousness #Philosophy #Self
Where do you end?
At the edge of your skin?
At the limits of your thoughts?
At the boundary of what you can perceive?
We experience life from a single point of view, so the self feels separate and contained.
But is that boundary as clear as it feels?
What exactly separates “me” from everything else?
#Consciousness #Philosophy #Self
What if consciousness is much bigger than us?
We usually think of consciousness as something inside us—
something produced by the brain,
contained within the boundaries of the self.
But what if we have the relationship backwards?
What if we are not simply conscious beings,
but participants in something larger?
Where does “my” consciousness end?
And where does everything else begin?
#Consciousness #Philosophy
Close your eyes.
You still know you are here.
But where is that knowing?
In the brain?
In the body?
In the signals moving between them?
We can observe neurons firing.
We can map patterns of brain activity.
But can we locate the experience itself?
Where does consciousness live?
#Consciousness #Philosophy #AI
Can consciousness exist without a body?
We often talk about consciousness as if it lives entirely in the mind.
But so much of being human comes through the body:
pain, pleasure, hunger, touch, movement, breath.
If intelligence can exist without a body, can consciousness?
Or is embodiment part of what makes experience possible?
#Consciousness #Embodiment #AI
What is consciousness?
Is it intelligence?
Awareness?
The ability to feel?
The experience of having a body?
Or simply knowing that you exist?
The more intelligent AI becomes, the more interesting this question feels.
Maybe understanding AI will eventually force us to understand ourselves.

What does it mean to reinvent yourself at 40?
For me, strangely, it started with AI.
The more I thought about artificial intelligence, the more I found myself asking questions about being human.
What is consciousness?
What is experience?
What does it mean to have a body, to feel, to be present?
Somewhere along the way, my exploration of AI became an exploration of myself.
From artificial intelligence to self-discovery.
Maybe reinvention isn’t always about becoming someone new.
Maybe sometimes, it’s about discovering who you’ve been underneath everything else.

At around 40, I’m less interested in becoming “better.”
I’m more interested in becoming more aware.
Aware of what I feel.
What I value.
What I’ve been carrying.
And what is actually mine.
#awareness#value
I spent years working with AI.
I didn’t expect it to lead me toward contemplation.
But the more powerful machines become, the more interested I become in stillness, embodiment, awareness, and direct experience.
Technology led me back to the human.

@mayemusk@harperbooks@HQstories “Reinvention at any age” really speaks to me. We often talk about becoming successful, but not enough about becoming someone new at different stages of life. Looking forward to reading this.

AI can become increasingly intelligent.
But can it experience the world without a living body?
If intelligence can be disembodied, can experience be disembodied too?
Perhaps embodiment is part of what makes human experience human.
