37 years since the classic Samsaaram Adhu Minsaaram released.

The central plot revolves around how monetary issues & ego can split up a joint family.
The film documents all numbers, so it'd be telling to translate this money to 2023 terms and do an analysis!

The first son Chidambaram earns - Rs.1725, and the second son Siva earns Rs.525.
When the spendthrift Chidambaram is asked to leave the house due to a conflict, he asks for the Rs.18,000 he had loaned for his sister Saro's wedding.
This splits the joint family.

In 1986, 1 USD was Rs.12.6
Roughly accounting for inflation, these are the 2023 values of the amounts from 1986:

1. Chidambaram's salary - 1.55 lakhs, of which he used to give Rs.71,000 (Rs.800 in 1986) to the joint family. After his wife left to her parent's house, he halved this amount to Rs.35,500 (Rs 400) and raises unsavory questions to defend his thriftiness

2. Siva's salary was Rs.47,500 (Rs.525) of which he used to give Rs.41,000 (Rs.450) to the joint family. Siva gave 85% of his salary to the family, whereas Chidambaram only used to give 46% of his salary despite earning more.

Hence he was called out for it rightly by his dad Ammaiyappan.

3. The loan amount Chidambaram had taken for Saro's wedding is 16.2 lakhs (Rs.18,000)
Kannamma's (maid) salary was Rs.3500 (Rs.35) in today's terms.

Despite their best efforts, a good joint family is broken due to fragile human ego that's driven by money.

A timeless classic, which makes more sense for the contemporary generation with this back of the napkin conversion to 2023 money.
