@HoDandHeart I needed to read this. On mat leave so I was able to attend my first born’s first ever sports day today, but the awareness that I would likely never get to again loomed large. I can see his school from my classroom but have missed so much ☹️

I just think that in our rush to make KS3 English rigorous, knowledge-rich and intellectually authentic -- all fine aims -- we shouldn't be too quick to skip the valuable, intermediate step that YA fiction can provide.
