For sure. The holding part is the hard part. Luck happens when preparedness meets opportunity. I have been unbelievably lucky indeed. I think a lot about why I’ve had this luck. What made me make the decisions I did? Why did I buy into the internet and Bitcoin and other good investments early? I think it has to trace back to the luck of my mom being a stockbroker and me learning investing from a very young age. I traded stocks when I was 9 years old. I played on the Quotron computer as a little kid. I loved the atmosphere of the brokerage from floor. There were no iPads for me — I would be there for hours late into the evening while my mom worked. I’d play with the shredding machine, mess with the computers and read the pink sheets. I thought they were cool because the stocks were cheap.
I’d ask questions like “Why don’t we get every broker in this whole office to all buy the same thing?” “How can I take over a company by buying enough shares?” “Why is that guy in the corner office yelling so loud?” My mom would answer and explain. I’d attend her speaking engagements and got so used to the content that I could repeat whole sections. I was a fixture in the office and all the brokers knew me. Some I’d later work with in my own career.
I got registered as a broker very young and was lucky enough to work with some great pros and learn the ropes.
One thing I’ve done my entire career, since age 19 is find mentors who are way ahead of me, people I can learn from and who will coach me and help me. Today I have this still. Early on it’s especially good to work for the best people you can.
When people ask me advice on if they should take a job I ask who they will be reporting to and who they will work with day to day. I recommend going with a financially stable company and being near as senior people as you can. This goes for entry level jobs as well. Even deca billionaires, heads of state and major CEOs have entry level people around them as gophers or interns. Try to work directly for a very senior person who is doing cool and important things. Try to get as many mentors as you can.

If you want to be rich in an honest and fun and fulfilling way, hang around the people who are rich and honest and leading good lives. Even if you have to clean tables at the country club. So I’ve been super fortunate to have some amazing mentors and employers. Good things have a price - my mom was tough and strict. My employer mentors demanded long hours and excellence and energy and work ethic to match their level.
I also had lots of painful lessons and learned…sometimes slowly. I don’t feel like I’m some sort of investor with a golden touch - but I have had like half a dozen unusually successful long term bets. I have been wrong, can be wrong and no doubt will be wrong again - part of wisdom is working to mitigate risks and be able to take calculated risks that are designed not to wreck you if things move against you.

Humility & being humble is key. Personally when I get arrogant I get wrecked. Also sticking to what you know and getting deep knowledge on something is key. Know something so well you can feel it in your bones. Get so you can smell success or failure a mile away. Get so in tuned with your focus area that your intuition can take over and guide you.
Also, life is pain and hardship for everyone. One person may be lucky in one area but have other hardships. Anyone who is exposed to good ideas is lucky - stability etc all factor in. Sometimes people become driven due to tragedy or some harsh circumstances.
Overall we can make our own luck to some degree but it depends on where we are relatively and some other factors. Anyone who is exposed to good mentors is lucky.
You are never too old to make some luck for yourself by practicing these ideas and working on bringing yourself the luck you deserve.
