Islamist gangs are accused of tightening their grip inside some British prisons, with reports that vulnerable inmates face a chilling choice: convert to Islam or risk intimidation and violence.

One government review described evidence that refusing to identify as Muslim could mean losing "protection" from the dominant gang or becoming a target.

The warnings go beyond prison violence. Britain's independent terrorism reviewer has documented extremist inmates exerting a "controlling and radicalising influence" over others, including recruitment backed by implicit or actual violence.

Now, Conservative shadow justice secretary Nick Timothy is demanding the Labour government investigate, while the Ministry of Justice says forced religious conversions are not tolerated.

A 14-year-old Dutch schoolboy was left fighting for his life after two Syrian teenagers aged 15 and 16 attacked him in Grijpskerk, the Netherlands.
Dion van den Berg was leaving a swimming pool when the two teens attacked him with a severe blow to his neck.

Dion's neck artery tore, causing a blood clot to travel to his brain and trigger a stroke. He was left paralyzed on one side of his body and rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The 16-year-old suspect had joined Dion's class a few months earlier. The school had told students not to react when the boy displayed troubling behavior, including hitting classmates “out of nowhere,” because he had experienced a great deal in Syria and was struggling.
