AWS just launched: AWS Interconnect 🔥🔥
Interconnect is AWS’s newer way to create private, high-speed links - not just to your on-prem systems, but also to other cloud providers.
Interconnect didn’t appear overnight. It’s actually the result of a long journey that started back in 2011, when AWS launched Direct Connect.
Back then, it was all about connecting your office or data center to AWS without touching the public internet.
Over the years, AWS kept improving it - more speeds, more regions, more reliability - but it still had one big limitation:
"It didn’t solve the multi-cloud problem."
✅Let's understand how Interconnect vs Direct Connect
Interconnect vs Direct Connect
If you’re wondering, “Isn’t this just Direct Connect with a new name?” - it’s not.
Here’s the difference in plain words:
Direct Connect
- Connects your on-premises environment to AWS
- You still deal with partners, cross-connects, and physical links
- Great for hybrid cloud, data centers, and low-latency needs
Interconnect
- Connects cloud-to-cloud or branch-to-cloud
- Fully managed by AWS
- You don’t need to talk to carriers or order circuits
- Routing is simpler, often just a few clicks
Think of it this way:
📡 Direct Connect → Your data center ↔ AWS
🔗 Interconnect → AWS ↔ Other clouds / remote offices
