The question isn’t if you want to be a language teacher- we all use language to teach content- it’s “what kind of language teacher do you want to be?” #swel#ELs#wdmcsESOL@brendakdaisy
Linquanti describes ELL-focused work as “a contrast dye that helps illuminate the strengths and weaknesses of the entire system. What is effective with ELL students is likely to be effective for all students.”

These S’s are analyzing exemplar writing & creating success criteria and learning targets—looks like we might have some future teachers in our midst, right @Kristel3162? #wdmcsESOL#ELL
A5 I know many times there are things with religious connections that teachers are not even aware of. They are so used to certain things being traditional, they don’t even realize the tradition comes for only certain religion #ELLCHAT
@gstew2 Some districts have $$ for bilingual parent liaisons. I think most schools need one! Not a bilingual secretary, not an ESL/bilingual teacher, a person actually dedicated to engaging families that have very specific needs. I would LOVE to have this job but I’m not bilingual 😂
There is a difference between scaffolds & structures. Just like during construction, staffolds are temporary (meant to be removed) but structures are necessary to continually support success. Knowing the difference & leveraging both can be 🔑 #Ellchat_BkClub#breakingdownthewall
Why take Ss out of class & have them miss core instruction when we can #collaborate to meet their needs right there in the classroom? 🤔
#Language is more naturally acquired when taught through #content. In fact, language IS content. Let’s stop separating the 2! #chooseinclusion
Not all refugees are #SLIFE

If an EL comes to school @ 8:00 a.m. as a language learner, they will still be a language learner during literacy & science. 30 minutes of language support does not cut it. EVERY teacher must support language all day, every day. @TajuLearning#iowaCLC19#wdmcsESOL
#ELs must figure out structure of English (& how it's similar or not to their first language) often using social interaction cues to make sense of what they hear. Blum Martinez #IowaCLC19
What is happening during the “silent period”? New language learners are trying to figure out, how is the language structured? Does it work like mine? —Dr. Rebecca Blum Martinez #IowaCLC19
