In the 1971 war, India lost a warship at sea. Its sonar had not been able to find the submarine that sank it.

India then tried to buy better sonar. The countries that made it would not sell.

So the Navy told one of its own officers to build it himself.

His name is Arogyaswami Paulraj.

He was born in Pollachi, a small town in Tamil Nadu. He joined the Indian Navy as a teenager and stayed for about 30 years.

The Navy spotted him early and sent him to the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi for a master's degree. His professors told the Navy not to stop there. He finished a doctorate.

After the 1971 war he was given the sonar problem.

He had no foreign help, no foreign equipment and no permission to buy either. His team built the system from the ground up. It was called APSOH. It went into the fleet in 1983.

It was not a compromise. It is still considered one of the best sonars in the world.

He went on to set up 3 national research laboratories in India, in computing, artificial intelligence and military electronics. India gave him the Padma Bhushan.

Then he left the Navy and joined Stanford University in America as a postdoctoral researcher, starting again at the bottom.

While running wireless experiments there, he noticed something odd in his results about how signals could be separated from one another. He followed it.

What came out of it is called MIMO. In simple terms, instead of one antenna sending and one antenna receiving, you use several at both ends at once, and the signals stop fighting each other and start carrying far more data.

That is the foundation of every WiFi connection and every 4G and 5G phone on the planet.

The chairman of the Marconi Society put it plainly. Every WiFi router and 4G phone today uses MIMO technology pioneered by him.

He founded a company on it, which Intel bought. He founded another, which Broadcom bought. He holds around 80 patents.

He has the Marconi Prize, the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal, the Faraday Medal, and a place in the United States National Inventors Hall of Fame.

The internet in your house is running on his idea right now, and almost nobody in this country knows his name.

This clip is from the 2026 Asian U23 Athletics Championships, held at the Sport Development Center Stadium in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China, from 9–12 July 2026.

Shravani Sangle, a 20-year-old sprinter from Maharashtra ran the final leg for India in the mixed 4×400 m

China led going into the closing metres, & Shravani came from behind to pass China’s anchor just 0.10 seconds ahead.

I was holding my breath watching that final lap. It didn’t look even conceivable that she would be able to catch up.

But Shravan wasn’t willing to see finishing second to a powerhouse like China as inevitable & acceptable.

She didn’t see the yawning gap as an impossibility.

She was practising the art of the possible…

Giving up wasn’t acceptable.

Yes, we had a disappointing weekend in cricket.

But at the same time, I often find myself rubbing my eyes in disbelief at India’s growing competitiveness in sports where I never imagined we’d even be globally competitive.

Volleyball. Fencing. Gymnastics. Rowing. Athletics. The list keeps growing.

Yes, we’re far from the top step of the podium yet.

However, something’s clearly changing at the ground level.

Years of effort by governments, both state and central, (outstanding example being Odisha) along with private sector organisations like OGQ and many others, may finally be starting to pay off..

But it is the individual sportspersons, this new generation of champions with grit, resilience and self-belief, who are my #MondayMotivation.

I’m not sure why I paused on this clip when it appeared on my timeline.

I don’t even know the name of the dance form (apparently it’s from Saurashtra) but it shows a grandfather teaching his grandson the steps.

Yes, the dance itself is wonderful. Full of energy, joy and life. The kind that makes you want to join in.

But what really drew me in was what this clip symbolised: the passing on of tradition, rhythm and memory from one generation to the next.

In today’s uncertain world, I found that strangely comforting. That not everything around you will change.

It was a reassurance of continuity.

Serious question:
Can anyone explain to me why India allows derivative trading by foreign players?

We are concerned about our currency, and are restricting various types of foreign currency transactions by our banks & corporations.

Yet, foreign institutions are taking away huge amounts of money as profits of purely speculative trades in derivatives

Even worse this money is coming out of the pockets of the Indian individuals - yes, the 91 to 93% who make losses as per SEBI data.

As per the last study published by SEBI, Indian individuals lost rupees 1.8 lakh crores in FY22 to FY24 - a considerable portion of that went straight overseas.

I fail to understand what is the purpose being served by allowing this speculation, usually done by sophisticated foreign investors:

- it drains hard currency reserves that we can ill afford to lose

- it is not investment money under either FDI or FPI

- it messes up our Balance of Payments

- it takes this money specifically out of the pockets of Indian individuals.
In fact, the SEBI study shows that the less educated lose more money, the people outside the metros lose more money and those earning less than 5 lacs per annum lose more money.

In short not only are the foreign players taking out large amounts of money, they are taking it out of the pockets of exactly the sort of individuals who cannot afford to lose it.

So what exactly is the purpose?
Yes the foreign players do provide liquidity in the derivatives market but the real question is that do we at all need a derivative market of this size?

India's derivative to cash segment trading is several times that of the most developed markets in the world. It is not something which is required, or even desirable, for healthy markets.

SEBI has been commendably trying to put restrictions on individual trading in the market but possibly attention is required on the other side of the trade

This may require other regulators and changes at a government level as to why we are allowing foreigners in this in the first place.

Yes, derivatives can be used for hedging and if a FPI investing in India wants to hedge, they can be restricted to just that. Just as a PMS can use derivatives for hedging but nothing more than that.

Am I missing something in this analysis?
