It wasn’t the runs or centuries that came to mind when the news broke. Of course, there are plenty of great ones & and they deserve their place in the spotlight.

Because before I get into what, for me, truly defines Kohli & his relationship with Test cricket, let's acknowledge some of his classics.

My most favorite Kohli knocks:

Adelaide, 2014: Twin hundreds in his first Test as captain. That breathtaking 141 in the fourth innings chasing 363: nearly pulled it off. Vintage Kohli.

Centurion, 2018: A majestic 153 at Supersport Park against Rabada, Morkel & Philander on a green seamer.

Birmingham, 2018: The unforgettable 149 & 51 vs prime Anderson & Broad. India lost by 31 runs, but Kohli’s fight was immortal.

Perth, 2018: The gritty 123 against Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood & Lyon in their backyard.

And oh, the small matter of 6 200s in just 18 months. That was the “Run adikkanum nu aasai illa annachi, pasi” era of Kohli in Test cricket. An absolute animal during that stretch: between July 2016 and Dec 2017, he racked up 2274 runs at 75.8, with 9 100s (6 of them doubles). Pure domination, Peak hunger, A beast in whites. That was Prime Kohli.

So, what are the final numbers? 123 Tests, 9230 runs, 30 100s, Average: 46.85.

For anyone else, that's a dream career. But with Kohli, the bar was so absurdly high, we scoffed at that average being 3.15 short of 50. What even!

But beyond stats, here's what I’ll always remember when I think of Kohli & Test Cricket. Kohli was one of us: a Test cricket romantic. In an era that sold its soul to the shortest format, Kohli stood tall & roared for Test cricket. The biggest brand of modern cricket used that very brand to uplift the longest format. That’s legacy.

As captain: 40 wins in 68 tests. India’s most successful Test captain. He often dropped a batter, played an extra bowler & went for the win. Not a draw, no safety net. Always went for the kill. Hostile attacks, hostile pitches, hostile crowds, hostile media. Abroad or home, he was our frontman & test cricket’s torchbearer.

Importantly, he cared about the test culture. He saw how Eng, Aus & SA built sacred venues and timelines: Lord’s, MCG, SCG, Newlands, Boxing Day, New Year’s Test. He suggested India do the same. Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi as test centres: turn them into cauldrons. That was his passion for test cricket.

He announces his retirement with just a heartfelt note on Insta, 770 runs short of 10000, walking away on his terms & not waiting around chasing milestones. That takes courage & class. Yes, the last few years haven’t been great & the signs were there. And yet, when the end comes… it still hits hard. We all thought there were at least another 1–2 years left in him. Maybe a final flourish, that one last century on a big overseas tour. But just like that, it’s done.

We won’t see him in whites again, but we know this for sure: his love for Test cricket will burn on & hopefully inspire generations to fall in love with this beautiful format! ❤️
