What do the powerful get up to behind closed doors? Here, @_Marcus_Morgan and I outline a new research agenda for how we might study this. Out now with @sociologyjnl Open access. https://t.co/lt6PiidSzU
Btw, this is how the interviewee was introduced:
'Let us talk to Tim Jakes Jacques who is on the line. Who's the newly appointed Independent Prevent Commissioner who previously spent years in charge of the UK's counter terrorism operations.'
New post on 'Society From the Top Down' in which I revisit work by Marxist economist Paul Sweezy on corporate interest groups, comparing his results to those of a community detection algorithm.

BBC attributes attacks to Israel only 50% of the time; The Guardian also just 54%.
By contrast, Al Jazeera explicitly names the perpetrator in 89% of cases.
Devastating new report from @newscord_org on the UK media's failure to accurately report Israel's genocide in Gaza.
Today @declassifiedUK revealed that govt advisors told Yvette Cooper that proscribing Palestine Action would be “unprecedented” bc unlike the 81 others on the list PA mainly damaged property.
It was unprecedented. It was also foreseeable. A thread on UK counter-terror history 🧵

Here's how it works:
1⃣ Starmer frames migration as a “problem” — culturally, economically, etc.
2⃣ Debate stays locked on that illusionary "problem" and not real issues like inequality or regional decline.
3⃣ Reform continues to fight on its preferred terrain — and wins.
There needs to be a documentary length exposition of Starmer’s lies. No other format can do justice to their breadth and depth. A pathological liar the like of which we’ve never seen in frontline British politics.
'They found themselves made strangers in their own country'
— Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech (1968)
'We risk becoming an island of strangers'
— Keir Starmer (2025)
Between 2010 and 2019, austerity policies led to an estimated 335,000 excess deaths. Nearly every expert agrees that deepening austerity will cause more.
Politicians now talk endlessly about defending us from Russia, while enacting policies that kill citizens at home.
British press: “oh didn’t Starmer do such a bloody great job sucking up to that man who wants to ethnically cleanse Gaza? Wasn’t it simply marvellous how he didn’t mention the ICJ/ICC cases? The adults are back. International law? Student politics”
New article by @ta_mills and I on ‘Elite Status-Seeking & Class Reproduction in Civil Society’ in @BJSociology. Nice thread by Tom below explaining the article
We are appalled by the Foreign Secretary’s failure to condemn President Trump’s deplorable call for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
A statement from the Independent Alliance.
I haven’t been in the Labour Party for for over two & a half years now, but disappointed to see the Socialist Campaign Group allow itself to be divided by Starmer’s tactics once again. We’ve seen this several times since @jeremycorbyn lost the leadership of the party. 1/2
