We need a presidential directive on the indiscriminate cutting down of trees, especially in our residential areas and major cities. At this point, it is a state of emergency.
There is a war on greenery in the cities, especially Accra.
Developers acquire land, cut down every single tree and cover almost every inch of soil with concrete. They are not being required to build around mature trees or replace the ones they destroy.
Who is regulating this?
We keep screaming “development, development, development,” but what kind of development makes our cities hotter?
Many of us grew up without air conditioning, yet the heat was not this unbearable because our homes, streets and neighbourhoods were protected by trees. Today, we cut them all down and then install air conditioners to survive the heat we have helped create‼️
The President, relevant ministries, local assemblies and planning authorities must treat this with urgency. Building permits should require developers to preserve mature trees wherever possible, justify every removal and replace every tree they cut down.
If we truly want to confront climate change and rising temperatures, it must start at home, with the way we build our houses, neighbourhoods and cities.
Trees are not obstacles to development, they are essential infrastructure.
Protect our trees!
