On this day in 1933, the first squadron of the Indian Air Force was raised at Drigh Road, Karachi—igniting the journey of India’s air power, a date observed as Air Force Day until 1976.
The day gained further prominence in 1954 when Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force, succeeding Air Marshal Gerald Gibbs.
In 1955, the designation of ‘Commander-in-Chief’ was redesignated as ‘Chief of the Air Staff’, marking an important evolution in the leadership structure of the Indian Air Force.

I know that this aircraft has the capability. It is a little too small of an aircraft for the current situation, however, we have such a place for an aircraft and we have ordered 200 plus aircraft of this type...We need to focus more towards the Mark 2 (aircraft) and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. We have the capacity and capability within the country to achieve this. Everybody has to come together to make it a success..."
