Sri Lanka is set to introduce Mobile Number Portability (MNP) by the end of September, allowing users to switch mobile service providers without changing their phone numbers.

Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne said the TRCSL will proceed under the Sri Lanka Telecommunication Act, with the government prepared to implement mobile portability first to ensure millions of subscribers are not delayed by issues affecting fixed-line services.

The long-awaited initiative has been in development since 2020, with legal clearance granted in 2023 for telecom operators to roll out the system.

The government has allocated Rs. 800 million to introduce the Wolbachia method to help reduce dengue and other diseases spread by mosquitoes.

So, what is it?

Wolbachia is a naturally occurring bacteria that already exists in many insects. When it is introduced into the mosquitoes that spread dengue, it makes it much harder for the dengue virus to survive inside them. As a result, those mosquitoes are much less likely to pass the disease to people.

This method was first developed by researchers at Monash University in Australia and is now used through the World Mosquito Program. Countries such as Australia, Indonesia, Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Honduras and El Salvador have already introduced it, with more countries joining the programme.

One of the largest studies in Indonesia found a 77% reduction in dengue cases and an 86% reduction in hospital admissions caused by dengue after the method was introduced.

As someone working in sustainability, I will also admit something. I do not know enough about the long term impact on the ecosystem to give an informed opinion. And I think that is perfectly fine. Social media often makes people feel they need to have an opinion on everything, but I would rather be honest about what I do not know than pretend to be an expert.

If Sri Lanka sees results similar to those achieved in other countries, this could make a real difference in protecting communities from dengue.
