1. “The sun sets in a muddy pool”
Source: Quran 18:86 (Surah Al-Kahf)
> “Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of dark mud (ʿayn ḥamiʾah), and he found near it a people…”

Context: This is describing the journey of Dhul-Qarnayn (a righteous ruler, often identified with Alexander/Cyrus legends). The phrase is “he found it setting in a spring of dark mud” from the observer’s perspective (Arabic: wajadahā taghrubu fī ʿaynin ḥamiʾah). Classical tafsirs (e.g., Tabari, Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir) unanimously say this is how it appeared to Dhul-Qarnayn — an optical phenomenon (the sun appearing to sink into the horizon, here a body of water that looked murky).
No reputable Muslim scholar historically interpreted this as a literal cosmological claim that the sun physically plunges into mud every evening.
Modern scientific assessment: the verse describes an appearance, not a mechanism. Claim of scientific error here is based on taking it hyper-literally out of its narrative and linguistic context.

2. “Sperm comes from between the backbone and ribs”

> “So let man observe from what he was created. He was created from a fluid, ejected, emerging from between the backbone and the ribs (sulb) and tara’ib).”

The words sulb and tara’ib:
- Sulb = backbone/loins (male).
- Tara’ib = ribs/chest area (usually interpreted as female, or the area between the ribs in general).

Modern embryology:
The testes originate during fetal life in the abdomen near the kidneys (around the level of the lower backbone). They then descend, passing “between” the region of the lower back and lower chest/abdomen before birth or shortly after. The seminal vesicles and prostate (where most of the seminal fluid is produced) are located in the pelvis between the lower spine and the pubic bone.

The verse is not saying the sperm itself is produced in the ribs, but that the gushing fluid (mani) emerges from that general region of the body. Many medical researchers (e.g., Dr. Keith Moore in the 1980s, and later Dr. Maurice Bucaille) noted this as remarkably accurate for the 7th century. Whether one finds it miraculous or not, it is not a scientific error.

3. “The embryo is a clot of blood”

Key phrase: ʿalaqah (translated variously as “clot,” “leech-like,” “hanging thing,” “blood-like”).

Stages listed: nutfah (drop) → ʿalaqah → mudghah (chewed-like substance) → bones → bones clothed with flesh.
Modern embryology (23–28 days): the embryo does look somewhat leech-like, is suspended in fluid, and has a blood-filled appearance before the circulatory system fully develops. Somites (day 28–35) resemble teeth marks on chewed flesh.

4. “The earth is flat / has edges”
No verse in the Quran says the earth is flat. Commonly cited verses:
- 78:6–7: “Have We not made the earth a resting place and the mountains as stakes?” → Describes earth as a comfortable expanse, mountains as stabilizers (modern geology: isostasy).
- 88:20: “And at the earth — how it is spread out (sutihat)?” → Sutihat means spread out/made habitable, not geometrically flat.
- 79:30: “And after that He spread the earth (dahāhā)” → The word dahā means “spread out” and also “made egg-shaped” (classical Arabic dictionaries, Lisan al-Arab).
