The Fine I Received for an Unintentional Mistake… A Valuable Lesson Learned

This happened a few months ago, but I only found out about it today.

At first, I received just one traffic fine notice. So I went to the CCTV Division to check the details. That’s when I discovered that I had actually committed the same offence on three separate occasions.

All three incidents occurred at the same location—Wellawatte, William Junction.

The offence: Stopping the vehicle beyond the stop line.

After watching the CCTV footage, I realized how many drivers must be receiving fines every day for making the same mistake.

The fine is Rs. 2,000 per offence. Since I had committed the offence three times, I had to pay Rs. 6,000. If you pay through the post office, there’s an additional service charge as well.

One of the officers there told me something that really stuck with me. He said there had been a case where one person had accumulated 17 fines for the same type of offence—that’s Rs. 34,000 in penalties.

That made me realize that once you’re caught by a CCTV traffic camera, the fine is unavoidable.

As technology advances, I think using systems like this to encourage people to become more law-abiding drivers is a positive step. For me, it was definitely a valuable lesson.

So, friends, always pay attention to the stop line and make sure you stop before it. Don’t let a small moment of carelessness cost you unnecessary fines. I hope my experience serves as a lesson for others.
