@Theater_Dev @GraceWalkerrr yeah, it’s a no from me. it aged badly. I was supposed to be in a production pre-pandemic and the racism was insane. it’s not doing what it thinks it’s doing in terms of satire. and imo, satire regarding race aint something white artists should touch anyway 🤷🏽♀️
If you are a new director, and I can not stress this enough, DON’T DO TRANSITIONS IN A BLACKOUT! Block transitions. Use them to tell a story. Don’t have your audience sit in silence while furniture gets shuffled around
At my reading yesterday, which was sold out 💅🏾, the audience was ALL white…except for THREE Black people who came up to me as soon as it was over, grabbed me by the hands and said “We wanted you to know we were here.”
Listen, #theatre is not inherently a public good. Yes, we SAY we welcome everyone, but we don’t actually. There are gatekeepers all over the fucking place, companies get tribal, artists get catty & resentful, ticket prices go up & up & up (not to mention the cost of parking) 1/
THINGS I’M NO LONGER APOLOGIZING FOR:
* My feelings
* Having boundaries
* Saying NO to something I’m not really interested in doing
* Not answering the phone when I can’t or don’t feel like it
* Taking a break

always amazes me how adaptable kids are bc when i told my (9) year old sister that i was Autistic & needed her to do things like text me BEFORE you call or when asking a question give a lot of detail and she was like ‘okay no problem!!’ but my mom cried and said i ruined her life
Making sure you have a healthy friend group outside of your romantic relationships ensures that you have a strong foundation. Not only are you honoring your connections, but you have multiple perspectives to navigate life with.
That’s a beautiful thing.
I feel bad for all the girls in DC. I saw so so so many gorgeous women when I went and not one man was attractive. Prayers up to those angels out there frfr.
To mature, we have to end our pattern of deflection. This will allow us to be more vulnerable and connected to the people we love. It shows us we care about their feelings, that we want to grow, and that we can handle our own discomfort.
Deflection Sounds Like:
-"I did that because you did x"
-"I'm always the bad guy"
-"It's not my fault you are too emotional"
-"If I'm so horrible, why don't you just leave me"
-"You're so dramatic"
-"Can't we just have peace?"
-"You're mean!"
