<The trouble started earlier this month with a small item about the couple in the Hollywood Reporter headlined “Why Hollywood keeps quitting on Harry and Meghan”. For a thin-skinned couple obsessed with their status, context is key. We therefore note that the story was just above a piece about the maitre d’ of a Los Angeles bar. In it, Archewell employees past and present queued up to make all sorts of allegations about how terrifying Meghan is, how relentless, how she belittles people and doesn’t take advice. The best quote, though, is halfway down. “She is,” one said, “just terrible.”

The couple could have responded to the story in one of two ways: preserve a dignified silence or come out fighting. Meghan hasn’t got where she is today by the former, and both prefer to sue first and look in the mirror later. As a result we have an unfolding saga full of rage and recrimination at the supermarket checkout. It’s a strategy, as Buckingham Palace once warned them, that serves mainly to fan the flames and keep the bad headlines coming — >
