PANDAS/PANS/BGE awareness Challenge, day one: Busting Myths
A thread
1. It’s only caused by strep
While PANDAS is only caused by strep, PANS basically the same thing, the only difference is it can be caused by any disorder.
5. It’s always acute and can’t be chronic
While it’s mostly known for being an acute onset, it can become chronic if not treated quick enough or correctly. It’s more rare, but some people will also have a more gradual progression of their symptoms
3. Adults can’t have it
Many adults have P/P/BGE. They can develop it as a child and continue on to adulthood or even get it as an adult.
4. You have to have tics
Tics are a common symptom, but only around 70% of people have them.
2. It’s a rare disease
1 in 200 children are diagnosed with PANDAS/PANS. This means it’s not rare. It’s is also often misdiagnosed because it is such a complex disorder.
@danitasteinberg This is increasing because most patients have no idea if they’ve had covid in the last year. Most aren’t even aware that covid has continued circulating at high levels and very few test themselves anymore. So if they develop LC, it really does seem like a mystery illness to them.
My brother’s dentists, neighbor’s lizard’s dad is cis and he said I can say cis, so I get a cis pass. He also said I can give “cis passes” to whoever I want.
I was at a conference this weekend and was with my crutches and this little girl (toddler) kept looking at them and so I explained, but she still looked confused.
Her mom came up to me later and said “I told her your crutches are like Sun Spider and she got it!” 🥺
