Lloyd Gaines applied to the Univ. of Missouri School of Law in 1936. Despite his exceptional scholastic record, his application was denied.
Lloyd Gaines filed a lawsuit after being denied admission. The Court ruled in his favor in 1938. The Court did not require Missouri to admit him but they had to set up a separate law school for Black people.
Mr. Gaines and the NAACP continued to challenge Missouri’s lack of effort in compliance with the ruling.
Three months after the Court ruling, 28-year-old Gaines went missing while living in Chicago and was never seen or heard from again.
Without Lloyd Gaines, the NAACP was forced to drop the case. He never had the opportunity to attend the University of Missouri or any other Black student until 1950. #DemsUnited #BlackHistoryWithLana
