The Last Dance terminó 💔
There was a lot of outrage and pontificating on Paraguay last night. Media coverage in the UK spoke of "disgust" and embarrassment.
This completely ignores the context. Football isn't about only playing one way. Paraguay don't owe anyone anything.
I cannot fathom the hate Paraguay is getting. Even if they are irritating and can be floppers and divers.
They beat Germany. They didn't let France, the best attack in the world, score a goal besides questionable pk.
France has 70 million people, tons of academies, tons of money, a recruiting pipeline from African countries that were once French colonies, the Ballon D'or winner, one of the best players in the world in Mbappe, and a team depth that basically only 1 other team can rival.
Yet people are clapping seals for them and ripping on how Paraguay played? A country of 7 million people, a country ranked like 100 in terms of GDP and wealth, ranked 41st in the world via FIFA rankings, and zero stars.
I think only Almiron and Encisco played in the EPL at some point lol. Yet people expect them to go toe to toe with the best team in the world? "But but but anti-football!" They're trying to win. Only people who have never played the game would have the gameplan to play an open game against the best attacking team in the world. Genius.
Well done Paraguay. You guys may have some cheap tactics too, but that's how you take it to the tournament favorites.
Terrible look for France tbh.
Once again, Paraguay showed why South American teams are some of the hardest opponents you can play against. You saw how France struggled to break them down? France didn’t even register a single shot on target in the first half, 😂 Arguably best attack in football. If not that penalty. Trust me, without it, Paraguay could have held France for 120 minutes without breaking sweat.
This is one of the first times I’ve seen Olise look so clueless in attack. Every time France tried to combine through the middle, Paraguay had bodies everywhere. The passing lanes lol, the spaces were closed instantly, and every duel felt like a battle, they hit Olise and Mbappe like 5 times in this game. France started shooting from outside the box because there was simply no room to play.
That’s exactly what South American teams do. They don’t allow you to play the football you want to play they force you into the football they want. They don’t mind defending for 120mins honestly. Possession doesn’t scare them. They’ll happily let you have it if all you’re doing is moving it from side to side without creating anything meaningful.
What impressed me most was Paraguay’s discipline. The back line stayed compact, the midfield worked tirelessly to protect the central areas, and every player knew exactly when to press and when to drop. There were no unnecessary gaps, no panic, and very few free runs in behind. France had more of the ball, but they rarely looked in control of the game.
This is why statistics like possession can be misleading. You can dominate the ball and still feel like you’re chasing the game because the opposition is dictating where you’re allowed to play. Paraguay dictated that match defensively. France had territory, but Paraguay controlled the danger. Hurt this is how they go out.
South American teams are so hard to play against, not because they’re necessarily better than you but because they force you to play their game, not yours. They don’t care if they only have 30% possession or if people call their football ugly. Their entire focus is on winning every duel, staying compact, frustrating you, and making every single attack feel like you’re running into a brick wall.
Tactically, they’re incredibly disciplined. The distances between the defenders and midfielders are so small that there are barely any passing lanes through the middle. If you want to break them down, you’re usually forced wide, and even then they’re aggressive in the box and dominant in aerial duels. They defend every cross like it’s the last minute of a World Cup final.
They’re also masters of controlling the rhythm of a game. They’ll slow it down when they need to, speed it up when there’s space, commit tactical fouls, win cheap free kicks, and make every restart take just a little longer. It can be frustrating to watch if you’re supporting the other team, but it’s an art they’ve perfected over decades.
And then there’s the mentality. South American teams genuinely believe they can beat anyone. Whether it’s Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, or Colombia, they embrace suffering. They’ll defend for 90 minutes if that’s what the match demands, and when that one counterattack or set piece arrives, they’ll take it without hesitation.
That’s why European possession-heavy teams often struggle against them. Having 70% of the ball means nothing if you can’t create clear chances. South American sides are comfortable without possession because they know football matches are decided by moments, not possession statistics. They’re patient, ruthless, and incredibly difficult to break down when they commit to a defensive game plan.
𝗤𝗨É 𝗝𝗨𝗚𝗔𝗗𝗢𝗥, 𝗠𝗔𝗧Í𝗔𝗦 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗭𝗔. 🇵🇾👏
