A judge facing such serious allegations should have taken the honourable path of voluntarily stepping aside to prevent dragging the judiciary into dispute and protect the dignity of the bench.
While that did not happen, I commend the Chief Justice and the judiciary for showing rare courageous leadership by placing Justice Stevens on administrative leave and referring him to the JLSC for investigation. This bold decision signals hope in breaking with the culture of impunity. It also sends a clear message that safeguarding the integrity of the judiciary outweighs personal interests.
I now urge the JLSC to pursue the investigation with diligence, transparency, and fairness. This is vital to strengthening public confidence in the judiciary.
The University of Sierra Leone must also take similar steps to examine any possible breaches of policies on lecturer-student relationships. Such action would send a strong signal that institutions entrusted with public confidence will not shield individuals from accountability.
Relevant authorities should also ensure that in the matters pending in the courts against the defendant Miss Jamiru, she receives not only a fair trial but also a psychosocial and legal aid support.
Only through such bold and uncompromising steps can we begin to restore faith in our justice and educational systems.

My Woman of the Year 2024
Respect to this remarkable woman. Since the onset of Israel’s genocide on the people of Gaza in October last year, Francesca Albanese, United Nations (UN) special rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, who was appointed to the role in May 2022, has played a key role in “disempowering” Israel’s actions. I use the word “disempowering” because, in spite of all the might of Israel in war and propaganda, she continues to speak out against Israel’s brutality and impunity.
Despite numerous attempts to silence her, she remained unwavering in her pursuit of the truth. Fully aware of the risks to her life and career, she has continued to document a series of reports explaining Israel’s crimes of genocide and against humanity in Palestine. Guided by the principles of international law and international human rights law, her reports helped us understand better the criminality of Israel’s actions and its accomplices.
Declared persona non grata by Israel, Francesca Albanese stands as a beacon of courage and integrity. In my humble view, she truly deserves to be recognised as the Woman of the Year 2024.
