"You Get What You Give" was basically a solo project disguised as a band. Gregg Alexander (singer, songwriter and producer) recorded almost the entire album Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too (1998) alone, playing most of the instruments and doing all the lead vocals. The track became the only major hit for the New Radicals.
Released as a single in 1998, the song reached #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was very successful on alternative radio and in several countries. The iconic ending of the song ("Beck, Hanson, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson You're all fakes") It generated a lot of controversy at the time. Several artists cited were angry, but Gregg Alexander explained that it was not a personal attack, it was a criticism of the materialism and superficiality of the music industry.
Gregg Alexander dissolved the New Radicals soon after success and completely disappeared from the spotlight. He never released anything again as a solo artist or in a band. After disappearing from the stage, he became a high-level behind-the-scenes composer and producer. His works include tracks for Ronan Keating ("Life Is a Rollercoaster"), Santana with Michelle Branch ("The Game of Love"), Enrique Iglesias and even The Script.
