Already I see Christians pushing back: “Why would you bring up George Floyd?”

A couple reasons.

One, many of the soft-on-crime policies in place today were in response to George Floyd’s death. In the name of racial equity and police reform, justice has been essentially disempowered in liberal-run cities. These policies have allowed someone like Decarlos Brown to roam the streets searching for his next victim.

Two, to highlight the disparate responses which points to sinful partiality. When Floyd died, every sphere of American society responded by condemning white supremacy and promising change. The assumption was that Floyd was murdered because of race, and that racism is imbedded into every faction of our country. White people were told to sit down and shut up, to feel the weight of the responsibility we all bear for the sins of people who share our melanin levels both today and throughout history. Evangelical leaders and pastors tied salvation to “racial reconciliation,” telling us that aligning with Black Lives Matter’s mission was an essential part of the gospel.

The problem was, none of it was true. We have no evidence race had anything to do with Floyd’s death. America is not systemically racist. Black people in America are not collectively oppressed, and white people are not oppressors. It is actually 7-8x more likely for a white person to be killed by a black person than the reverse. The patterns that we were told were victimizing black people do not exist.

Those lies had consequences. Motivated by these false beliefs, which were spread by many prominent Christians, activists burned cities to the ground. Never forget David Dorn and 8-year-old Secoreia Turner, two of dozens of innocent people (who were also black) who were murdered by BLM rioters. “Criminal justice reform” had its big moment, which only encouraged more violent crime.

Despite Brown explicitly saying, “I got that white girl,” I have seen no one suggest that we should respond the way BLM activists did in 2020. I’ve seen no suggestions of payback or violence. I’ve seen no prescriptions for the collective condemnation of everyone of one race, or demands that people of higher melanin counts should pay money to learn about the oppression of white people.

All I’m saying is that crimes don’t just matter when the racial makeup fits into the narrative of black oppression. And we should be harsh against ALL criminals, no matter their skin color. Ironically, that, more than anything else, will save lives of people of all shades.
