Ten years ago I sat next to my hoa Rochelle Tuitagava‘a Fonoti as we celebrated the launch of a special journal issue on Indigenous anthropology we co-edited with @TiLovesLiz. I will miss her generosity, warmth, and aloha and will remember her now in ‘aha. A hui hou e ke hoa.
the Los Angeles Asian American Film Festival aka @VCFilmFestival has a tons of great films to watch, including this short by Li‘ua Tengan, daughter of @nativemanremade our department's own Ty Tengan. Gratz Ty and Li‘ua! https://t.co/9qWDfX4W2v
Mahalo to everyone who wrote to BOR to support ES! Changes to recommendations on Monday meant we were not going to be cut, but your voices showed how ES & programs like WS & Theatre/Dance can offer us visions of a better and more just future. Mahalo! @chumei808@ProfessorRod
@chumei808 Thanks for getting this out Laurel! Sorry I didn’t send an update last PM—was a long day! Mahalo all for the awesome testimonies that’ve been coming in. ES is feeling the love and will return it by upholding our kuleana at UH to fight for the communities of Hawai‘i and Oceania.
@nitashatsharma @chumei808@rcrath@ProfessorRod They didn't actually give an explanation. We're glad the correction was made, but we know there is a long way to go and lots of challenges ahead still. We'll try to talk through some of that today and how best to strengthen ES and support our friends in other departments.
*ES UPDATE: Last night the MBT removed the option to stop-out ES from their recommendations. Mahalo to all who have already written for us! Attend our meeting@3 today for updates and next steps. Stay tuned for longer post this PM. @chumei808@rcrath@ProfessorRod
@chumei808 Mahalo Laurel! For all who are wondering, the recommendation was "work closely with IS" to increase enrollments, but if there are declines "an option is to stop-out" ES and put us under IS. Our numbers are actually up this year, so yay! But we will respond. Stay tuned!
@chumei808@NoeGK @pomaika__i Mahalo e Laurel and all kāko‘o! Recommendations are supposed to be out tomorrow, and we'll see the exact language then (I've been told that the new language is "partner with IS," which is still vague). E maka‘ala kākou!
@algoriphagus @uhmanoa Thanks Rosie! ES and WS are not yet on the full cut list; initial rec was for Interdisciplinary Studies to administer our BAs. This changed based on the feedback we sent, but we remain vigilant and in solidarity with all threatened programs!
@ALUhawaii Mahalo ALU! Just clarifying, ES and WS are not quite on the chopping block—initial rec was to have Interdisciplinary Studies administer our BAs, but that changed based on our responses. We'll see the final rec's tomorrow or Monday, but we do support all threatened programs!
@Sheearyann @sha_merirei@uhmanoa Mahalo Shea! The process is still in flux; the rec's for ES and WS was not to dissolve, and as we are still going back and forth with them, I don't want to put out their recommendations before they do publicly. But we do appreciate the support and readiness!
@NoeGK @pomaika__i @lisagrand808 @landonjumpoff @tinagrand808 @prxncesa_ @Sheearyann @_vehia_ @eananealo @wild_kat808 @CameronGrimm808 @sarahmichall @Bryylliant @crossoverpuzzle @drlaniteves @chumei808 That's my understanding too. Everyone should definitely be ready to read those recommendations carefully and also check in with impacted departments. Looks like I'll be on Twitter more!
@NoeGK@honeyless@sha_merirei@nicgrove @SavageEcology @Kue_Kawena@prxncesa_@kamanabeamer@Megmo808 Mahalo e Noe! As follow up to my last tweet, WS and ES did get a response with changed language from the admin, which is why I wanted to have folks just wait and see what the final recommendations are. We really appreciate all the support!
