What is most remarkable about this whole saga is that Downes will openly decry very milquetoast, brazen foreign lobbyists within someone else's party, but be oblivious to the presence of those exact same foreign lobby forces, except a great deal more malign, within his own.

The case in mind is that of Scott Benton, who is a known Zionist, friend of Israel, and proven illegal lobbyist who attempted to sell government secrets (which led to his resignation as an MP), and yet Downes said nothing about this man being put in a leading organisational role within his own party.

It suggests that either Downes is completely stupid, OR that he is completely corrupt, OR that he doesn't actually believe what he said about Reform friends of Israel, but just said it to be a dog whistle for his online fanbase.

A permanent solution to illegal or exploitative work is to regulate the labour force through the equivalent of a work passport or rolling 'CV' system, where every employee and their place or work (including self-employment) is registered on a database in the same way as driving licences or tax records.

That way, illegal employment becomes impossible, because all it takes is having to check a document against a database to identify it, and anyone who is an illegal immigrant will never be in possession of such documents.

Such a system would also make it easier to identify people who have issues with long-term unemployment, and give them targeted assistance, and it would also enable, through comparing work records with income, the identification of black economy workers and illegal activity.
