I count progress in summers. 22 summers since my suicide attempt. Not free from depression. Not free from anxiety. Free from needing to die. Each year gives me strength, because it is another line I never thought I'd reach. The most impossible thing I ever did was somehow stay.

I hate it when people in eating disorder recovery say “if I can recover so can you”. Recovery relies on a whole load of circumstances coming together. I personally got to where I am today because I have a strong support network, access to treatment, financial stability…

This fully demonstrates the stigma around severe mental illness & the low expectations people have for those with SMI & disabilities
We are more than just our illness
What people think anorexia is:
• weight loss
• being thin
• not eating
What anorexia actually is:
• self hatred
• poor sleep
• constant anxiety
• food rituals
• deception
• depression
• guilt and shame
• loneliness
• rigidity in routine
• avoidance
• isolation
Medical students have GOT to learn more about eating disorders. The illness prevalence is increasing, whilst the knowledge amongst clinicians seems to be decreasing. This has to be addressed.
You don’t need to apologise for:

🌟 Needing some alone time
🌟 Putting in boundaries
🌟 Asking for help
🌟 Having a bad day
🌟 Being yourself
I'm supporting the #dumpthescales march because the scale of the dump that the eating disorders services will be in (and arguably already in)—if we don't intervene quickly—will be enormous.

Complimenting someone on weight loss is problematic for lots of reasons. What we are telling people is that they are better when they take up less space, and highlighting that we are paying attention to their bodies.
