Whereas
#Syncope = putting the 💻 in sleep mode (screen off briefly, move the mouse, then back to work).
My Tip: Know your audience and cater the discussion with examples from daily life. Patients find it more engaging.

Explaining the age-old "seizures vs syncope" to a Gen Z student:
#Seizure = 💻 shuts down & restarts. While you wait for the Windows to load, you can’t really do much = waiting for awareness to return (post-ictal).

What is the normal function of alpha synuclein in the gut? These new finding should draw the attention of everyone in Parkinson’ disease research.
Key Points:
- Nine years were invested in collecting and analyzing ‘biopsies of the duodenum—the first part of the intestine where nerves normally produce very little αS—from 42 children unlikely to have Parkinson's disease.’
- Alpha synuclein was present ‘in the nerves of the inflamed intestine—and the more intensely inflamed the tissue was, the more was there.’
- They then examined biopsies from 14 children and two adults who received intestinal transplants and later developed infections with ‘norovirus.’
- In 4 folks the alphasynuclein appeared only during infection.
- Could synuclein protein be a magnet for inflammatory cells.
- Synuclein in ‘normal conformation or in the misfolded aggregates attracted white blood cells that are present in both acute and chronic inflammation.’
-Both forms of activated ‘dendritic cells, which lead to lasting immunity by presenting bits of foreign invaders to lymphocytes—the white blood cells that "remember" specific microbial intruders and respond in force to later invasions.’
My take: Beautiful summary by Meredith Wadman reminding us how important it can be to understand normal function.
When we produce alpha synuclein in the gut wall is may be the ‘cause—and not the effect—of tissue inflammation.’ Humbling! #parkinson
Mayo Clinic is once again top-ranked in more specialties than any other hospital and is the only healthcare organization with two hospitals on the U.S. News Honor Roll in the U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" rankings for 2024-2025. Read more: https://t.co/rjYZOHEB48
