Our Bird of the Week is the double-crested cormorant!

The double-crested cormorant is a sleek, black waterbird found across North America. Known for its distinctive double crest of feathers grown during breeding season, it dives underwater to hunt fish with remarkable agility.

This week's Bird of the Week is the mountain bluebird!

Found in western North America's mountains, its electric blue color makes it unmissable. Named State Bird in Idaho and Nevada, it migrates to Mexico in winter and returns to Canada and Alaska in summer.

Our Bird of the Week: green broadbill!

Found in lowland broadleaf forests of south east Asia, jewel-like green males sport a black 'comma' by the eye, a dome crest, and black wing bands. They feast on soft figs, spreading seeds, and their call is a soft, bouncing hoot.

Our Bird of the Week is the distinctive anhinga!

The anhinga hails from swamps across southern North America and South America. Sometimes confused with cormorant, its hookless bill, distinctive long fan-like tail and dappled white markings on the upper wings set it apart.

Our Bird of the Week is the Japanese long-tailed tit!

Known for its cotton ball-like appearance, this tiny bird's tail makes up nearly half its body length and weighs under 10 grams. Found in Hokkaido's forests, they lick frozen sap in late winter for energy.

Our Bird of the Week is the northern white-faced owl! 🦉

Known for its shapeshifting, it puffs up to appear larger or contracts to blend in with trees. With pale gray plumage and a white face, it inhabits dry savanna in northwestern Africa. Listen for its soft "huu-hooo" call.

Our Bird of the Week: the hooded merganser! 🦆

Found in eastern North American freshwater, marshes, and saltwater bays. Nest in tree cavities and sometimes lay eggs in other ducks' nests. Females fiercely protect their broods, and males flaunt a stunning crest during courtship!

Meet our BOTW: the secretary bird! 🦅

With its long legs and quill-like crest, it roams the grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa, hunting small mammals, reptiles and insects by bludgeoning them with its powerful legs. Whilst often quiet, it gives a harsh sawing cry during courtship.
