New Zealand is deep in a brutal Flu A wave right now and the stories coming out are wild.
“Children with influenza A that is evolving into horrific things like severe respiratory failure, encephalitis, guillian barre syndrome… Its not just a flu.”
“They have an unprecedented number of children in there at the moment with flu… some of them do sadly die in there.”
“It has felt worse than Covid and I was hospitalised during lockdown with Covid.”
“One of my classes today had nearly half the kids out due to illness… I don’t remember ever seeing it this bad before.”
“My son’s high school had just under half students away last week sick. It’s a school of thousands!”
Hospitals code red, clinics overwhelmed, people still showing up to work coughing up bright yellow phlegm like they are heroes.
If this is what the southern hemisphere Winter looks like, the northern hemisphere better get ready.
Kinda wild how most people generally recognize that the "too sick to go to school, too sick to watch tv/play games" mindset our parents had was bullshit but still impose essentially the exact same rules on disabled adults and scrutinize them for enjoying low-energy hobbies while being too fatigued or in pain to work a full time job (or any job at all)
really wish ppl understood the message behind what this woman is saying here.
there is no plan B, plan C, plan whatever - without your health. and we have entire generations throwing it into the wood chipper
not to mention the humiliation rituals you're put through to prove you're disabled or still disabled, even with disabilities you're BORN with and will never go away.
there is nothing fun or good about being too ill and/or disabled to work. no one likes relying on an ableist welfare system to MAYBE provide you below the poverty line income if they even assess you correctly. or relying on another person who is able to work to provide-
for you both. we also have no flexibility to change how we receive income. we're trapped with bare minimum or nothing at all. can't switch jobs/careers, can't get promoted, can't get raises. can't pick up a few more hrs for extra $.
none of this is an easy/free ride.
my friend sage is preparing to go away for their summer to work on their MFA and they need funds for the move. they have limited access to familial support and lost their mother at the start of the year. the goal is $2k and if you're able to help they're @/kaysagehenry on paypal
I am so serious when I say that most of us dramatically underestimate how unprepared we are for if and when air conditioning becomes inaccessible to swaths of humanity.
This heat is nothing to fuck with, and when we take for granted being able to escape it, we forget that.

4 years later (than when originally posted), but a whole lot louder in a society that has accepted incessant/unnecessary sickness so as to uphold the post pandemic simulation.
a friend on private pointed out that leftists dont want to admit that the govt absolved them of caring for each other re: masking and now i’m stuck on how many leftists preach communal care for all, care for the elderly, for children, for your neighbors. but not the disabled.
I think "imperfect maskers" should spend less time convincing "full-time maskers"(?)* that they're doing enough and more time convincing people who don't wear a respirator to wear one more often.
