"An open source media server—Navidrome—paired with the right client app is significantly better and more capable than I anticipated. Rather than feeling like a downgrade, it feels like a viable alternative."

About a decade or so ago I switched from Mac to Linux. When I did so, I was too busy to figure out how to make my old iTunes music available.
I finally got the amazing @navidrome music server set up and I'm listening to some old favorites. Here's one.

Someone built their own self-hosted jukebox with NFC cards so their 2 year old daughter could play music, free from other product's locked ecosystem. It plugs straight into Navidrome!

Selling physical books, AI narrating magazines... We can't wait to order robotaxis and book dentist appointments on Spotify's super app!
And if music is your thing, there's always Navidrome
New unofficial guide from a community member!
"A complete, beginner-friendly guide to getting the very best out of your self-hosted Navidrome music server — from installation to perfect metadata, playback, and beyond."

"Self-hosting isn’t as complicated as it sounds and the trade-offs are pretty reasonable. You’ll spend some time tagging files and maintaining your server, but in return you get a library that nobody can alter, remove tracks from, or monitor for profit."

Your music. Your rules.
Totally legitimate fear!
We are actually starting to think about a legal structure to ensure Navidrome remains open-source and community-centric. What other open-source software have you seen do this well that we could learn from?

save all your music as opus 128k/192k, run a navidrome server off a random old pc/laptop you have laying around, use feishin on pc and symfonium on mobile, never pay for streaming services again
Another benefit from Navidrome: your library is under your complete control.
You're not locked in if you want to move elsewhere. And you can listen to that same library on whatever device and service you like. Even on your old iPod. Because we all love our old iPod 🫶
With Navidrome, you're in control: don't like AI? Navidrome ships free of AI features. You do want AI? Add it in, it's up to you.
For example, there's AudioMuse-AI which brings automatic playlist generation to your self-hosted music library on Navidrome!
