I did a double take when I saw this…

Jump rope may not be among the most prestigious or widely followed sports.

But it demands extraordinary fitness, agility, coordination and reflexes & perhaps says something about a country’s broader sporting culture.

Like me, I suspect many of us have grown accustomed to seeing clips of athletes from other countries, notably the West, but increasingly China too, displaying astonishing skill and dexterity.

I confess I hadn’t expected any clip on the subject to feature an Indian team.

And then I discovered that, late last month in China, our team won gold in an event at a global competition.

Displaying not just athleticism, but creativity, bringing a uniquely Indian flavour to the sport…

March 25, 1983. Pasadena, California.

The room was filled with Motown legends.

Smokey Robinson. Marvin Gaye. Diana Ross. Stevie Wonder. And, for one extraordinary night, the Jackson brothers were back together on the same stage.

But when the Jackson 5 medley ended, something unexpected happened.

The lights shifted.

The brothers walked away.

And Michael Jackson was left standing alone.

No army of dancers. No elaborate stage machinery. No explosions of pyrotechnics. Just a 24-year-old Michael in a black sequined jacket, cropped black trousers, white socks, loafers, a fedora, and one single rhinestone glove.

Then the opening notes of “Billie Jean” began.

At that moment, Michael was already a star. Thriller had been released only a few months earlier, and “Billie Jean” was sitting at the top of the charts. But what happened next would turn him into something far bigger: a performer who seemed to belong to an entirely different category.

He adjusted his hat.

Paused.

Hit the beat.

And suddenly, the stage belonged to him.

Every movement looked impossibly precise—the sharp kicks, the spins, the sudden freezes, the way his body seemed to move independently of the music and yet perfectly inside it.

Then came the moment nobody in the room was prepared for.

Michael leaned forward.

His feet moved.

But instead of walking forward, he appeared to glide backward.

For a few seconds, gravity seemed to stop making sense.

It was the moonwalk.

The move itself was not invented by Michael Jackson; variations of the backslide had existed in street dance and earlier performance traditions. But Michael took it, refined it, and placed it in front of a massive television audience with such precision and theatrical timing that the move would forever be associated with his name.

And the reaction was immediate.

The audience erupted.

What had been a celebration of Motown's history suddenly became something else: the arrival of a new kind of pop icon.

There is something almost poetic about how simple the performance was.

A black jacket.

One white glove.

A fedora.

A microphone.

And a few seconds of impossible footwork.

That was all Michael needed.

Behind the scenes, the moment had been far less certain than it looked. Michael had been unsure of what he would do for his solo performance right up until the night before. At home, he played “Billie Jean” loudly in the kitchen and let the rhythm guide his movements. He had practiced the moonwalk privately for some time, but this would be the first time he performed it publicly.

Even the famous jacket had its own story. Michael found a black sequined jacket in his mother's closet and immediately imagined how it would look beneath the stage lights.

He was right.

When those lights hit him, every sequin flashed.

The outfit, the pose, the glove, the hat, the silence before the beat—all of it became part of the mythology.

And perhaps the most remarkable thing is that Michael himself wasn't completely satisfied afterward. He reportedly felt he hadn't stayed on his toes long enough. To everyone watching, however, it didn't matter. They had just witnessed something they had never seen before.

When Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever finally aired on NBC on May 16, 1983, millions of people saw that performance.

Children tried to copy the moonwalk.

Dancers studied his every movement.

The single white glove became an icon.

And Michael Jackson's image changed forever.

He had walked onto that stage as a former child star who had already become a successful solo artist.

He walked off it as Michael Jackson—the King of Pop in the making.

The entire performance lasted only a few minutes.

The moonwalk itself lasted only seconds.

But sometimes, that's all history needs.

A few beats.

A flash of light.

A man standing alone on a stage.

And one impossible step backward...

Seventeen years ago today,
Michael Jackson was privately laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California — more than two months after his passing on June 25, 2009.

The invitation-only service was held outside the Great Mausoleum. His children placed a crown upon the casket. His brothers served as pallbearers. Family and close friends gathered for a quiet farewell.

He remains interred in the Holly Terrace section of the Great Mausoleum, a place closed to the general public.

Forever remembered.

On February 19, 1980, Bon Scott, AC/DC’s charismatic lead singer, went out partying in London after a night of drinking. He ended up unconscious in a friend’s car, and the friend decided to let him sleep there instead of taking him home. The next morning, he was found dead. He passed away due to alcohol poisoning at the age of 33.

The band was devastated. Angus and Malcolm Young seriously considered breaking up AC/DC. Bon wasn’t just their singer, he was the soul of the group. But they decided that the best way to honor him was to keep making music.
