Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata for violin and continuo in G major, BWV 1021 (1732-33): this is how Bach expected chamber music to be heard. not in a concert hall, but at elegant dinners and gatherings of music-loving friends. So if you're listening with a glass of wine or beer in hand, you're experiencing it much as Bach's contemporaries did. Composed during Bach's Leipzig years, the sonata survives thanks to a manuscript copied by his second wife, Anna Magdalena Bach, whose musical skill and dedication helped preserve many of his works. Unlike Bach's earlier violin sonatas with obbligato harpsichord, BWV 1021 returns to the traditional Italian sonata style: the violin carries the melodic line, while the continuo (harpsichord, cello, and theorbo) provides harmonic support. The result is a brilliant, elegant, and richly expressive work that perfectly captures the charm of Baroque chamber music.
