Very sad news to all of you who have been in the NHS longer than me. Maurice Naylor CBE, my uncle (aged 100 this December) sadly passed away this week. He was perhaps the most successful/celebrated NHS administrator of his era. He will be remember by many with love and affection.
Pathology testing problems reveal the problem of fragmentation of NHS pathology labs. Pat Carter and I have argued for years the need to centralise pathology on an industrial scale. Increases efficiency, productivity and resilience. Many lessons to learn here for the future.

We were delighted to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to formally open the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals today. Our patient, 11 year-old Aaliyah, pictured, had cochlear implant surgery in 2019 and can now hear "the sound of leaves crunching under my feet".
Good hearing views challenges & opportunities for NHS Estates today from @naylor_robert Sue O’Connell @CHP_estates & others. Debated scale of problems & backlog, capacity & capabiliy to deliver, need for strategic decisions & commitment on finance & more local accountability
@naylor_robert says that primary care is where we've made the least progress in reconfiguring the #nhsestate. 30% of GP practices have list sizes that are too small to support the delivery of new models of care.
Sarah Butler our #Healthcare estates expert will be attending the Westminster Health Forum today, hearing from @naylor_robert and others. As well as joining in the discussion around key issues for #NHS estate optimisation
@jappleby123 @ChrisCEOHopson @sarahwollaston@NHSProviders@CommonsHealth Exactly, that’s what my report illustrated, with recommends for a strategic approach and matching investment for the first time since the 1962 ‘Hospital Plan for England’
@sarahwollaston @ChrisCEOHopson @NHSProviders@CommonsHealth I look forward to explaining the reasons why our NHS has a maintenance backlog and what is planned to be done to address this strategically
@dombey@naylor_robert We would also be interested to know how those hospitals will be staffed as we can’t sufficiently staff the services we offer now.
What is the proposed timeline, please?
And crucially, what about community care/ district nurses and AHP teams and Health visitors?@SolentNHSTrust
This is the follow on from the Naylor Report ‘Why the Estate Matters for Patients’ published two years ago and endorsed by the Government. It’s the first strategic estate report since 1962 (The Hospital Plan for England). Its long overdue and it comes with £3bn funds.
