More Than 46 Illegal Immigrants Arrested as SANDF and SAPS Launch Major Operation PROSPER Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Gauteng's Gugulethu Informal Settlement

Operation PROSPER led to the arrest of more than 46 illegal immigrants during a joint illicit mining and anti-criminality operation conducted in the Gugulethu Informal Settlement, Gauteng. The operation took place on 12 and 13 July 2026 and was carried out by Solomon Mahlangu Regiment Charlie Company under Joint Tactical Headquarters Gauteng alongside the South African Police Service.

Authorities said the operation focused on tackling illicit mining and criminal activity in the area. Those arrested were detained for allegedly contravening the Immigration Act. The operation formed part of joint efforts between the South African National Defence Force and the South African Police Service to address crime linked to illegal mining.

During the operation, officers confiscated gold-processing equipment, including steel balls, shovels, stamping pots, oxygen gas cylinders, phendukas, generators, electric motors, spades and a welding machine. The operation was conducted under Joint Tactical Headquarters Gauteng as part of Operation PROSPER targeting illicit mining and related criminal activities.

According to the South African National Defence Force, it remains committed to supporting the South African Police Service in combating criminality within communities. The operation was reported by Warrant Officer Class 2 Letsebe Ramaboa and Corporal Sindi Ntayingane from the Joint Tactical Headquarters Gauteng Operational Communication Office, with photographs provided by the Communication Team.

Two Men Arrested After Intelligence-Led Police Operation Uncovers 11 Cone-Pack Explosives Allegedly Meant to Be Sold in Meloding

Two men, aged 37 and 47, were arrested in Meloding, Lejweleputswa District, after an intelligence-led police operation uncovered explosives at a dwelling. The suspects were taken into custody for allegedly unlawfully possessing explosives following a joint operation involving Crime Intelligence and the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU).

Police said members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit acted on information received from Thabong Crime Intelligence on Tuesday, 14 July 2026. The intelligence indicated that the suspects were in possession of explosives and were allegedly looking to sell them to interested buyers. Officers followed up on the information and proceeded to an address in the Senzela Section of Meloding.

A search of the property resulted in the discovery of eleven cone-pack explosives. The Explosives Unit was called to the scene to safely handle and remove the explosives, which were confiscated and booked in as evidence. The two suspects were arrested for contravening Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Virginia Magistrate’s Court soon. Police said the arrests followed the continued cooperation between Crime Intelligence and the Anti-Gang Unit, which has produced positive results in operations across the Lejweleputswa District.
