AIRASIA- WHAT EXACTLY ARE TAXPAYERS BEING ASKED TO UNDERWRITE?
Reuters reported on 12 October that discussions had taken place over potential govt backing for AirAsia’s fundraising. Tony Fernandes disputes that financial assistance was discussed, saying the meetings concerned aviation costs. He nevertheless acknowledged seeking govt help to obtain loans from Malaysian banks. No approved bailout has been established by this report.
I have nothing personal against AirAsia, its shareholders or Tony Fernandes. My concern is public policy- when govt support is considered for a privately controlled business, what risk falls on taxpayers, & what do they receive in return?
On 18 September, Tony said AirAsia had more than RM1 billion in liquidity, remained sustainable & did not need a rescue. He also disputed reports of govt discussions about other airlines absorbing AirAsia’s domestic capacity.
He separately described a US$1 billion funding offer from a Middle Eastern investor, with a signed term sheet pending due diligence. That is a funding prospect, rather than proof that the money has arrived.
Question is straightforward- if the business is sustainable & private financing is available, what additional role is the govt being asked to play?
The Edge has reported an MOF letter of support connected to AirAsia’s fundraising. Whether that support creates any govt repayment obligation remains unclear. MOF should disclose its nature, scope & potential exposure. A public assurance should never leave taxpayers guessing about their liability.
There is also the airport-payment issue. Reuters reported in September, citing sources, that AirAsia owed Malaysia Airports at least RM500 million & had received repayment extensions. Neither the outstanding amount nor the commercial terms was publicly confirmed in that report. The current balance & repayment arrangements should be clarified before any further support is considered.
AirAsia’s contribution to affordable travel, employment & tourism deserves recognition. But economic importance does not create an automatic entitlement to public financial backing.
This principle applies to every private enterprise. Govt must demonstrate a measurable public benefit whenever it proposes to place public resources or credit behind private commercial obligations.
Any proposed support should answer these questions-
What is the independently verified funding gap? How much fresh capital will shareholders contribute? What security & compensation would taxpayers receive? Would assistance protect Malaysian connectivity, or also finance losses elsewhere in the group? What happens if repayment fails?
Protecting passengers & essential routes can be a legitimate public objective. Protecting shareholders from commercial risk requires a different justification.
If govt takes the risk, the public must receive enforceable protection & fair compensation. A private company’s financing difficulty cannot, by itself, justify a public obligation.
MOF should publish the facts & proposed terms before making any commitment. Taxpayers are entitled to know exactly what they are being asked to support-& why.

Gue nggak ngerti kenapa orang masih mikir fundraising itu susah, padahal intinya cuma ketemu orang yang punya duit dan yakinin mereka buat invest di ide lo.

@TheWildcaster Ya emang sih, startup juga gitu. Kalau tim nambah terus tapi ngak dipikirin infrastrukturnya, ya jadi begini. Small problem, big impact.
