Chances are we have all had a meal at Swiss Chalet at one point or another, so let's learn a bit of the history of this Canadian brand!

The first Swiss Chalet opened at 234 Bloor Street in Toronto in 1956. It was opened by Rick Mauran, the son of Maurice Mauran, who founded the Chalet BBQ of Montreal. Rick was also a co-founder of Harvey's.

The first location was designed with exposed-beam ceilings to give it the style of a Swiss chalet, hence the name. The chicken was also cooked in the Swiss way, which involved cooking on a rotating spit over an open flame on charcoals.

That location remained in operation until 2006 when it closed. The building is now gone, having been demolished in 2009 to make way for a condo development.

After the original location opened, it became popular enough that two more locations opened in the city.
The business continued to prosper and by 2021, there were more than 220 outlets located around Canada.

While there were attempts to get the business to branch into the United States, it didn't have much luck. All the locations in the United States and the one in Puerto Rico closed eventually.
