Following the fall of Charleston, South Carolina, in May 1780, North Carolina initiated a rapid militia mobilization to defend its territory. County militias from across the colony of North Carolina were assembled at regional mustering grounds in June. Brigades from the Salisbury, Hillsborough, and Halifax districts organized under Major General Richard Caswell (left) and Brigadier General Griffith Rutherford. The June 1780 mobilization stands as an important episode illustrating North Carolina's resilience and the challenges of sustaining manpower in the South during wartime.
On this date 251 years ago, a bold and radical set of 20 anti-British resolutions were drafted in Charlotte Town, declaring all Crown-granted commissions null and void. The Mecklenburg Resolves, adopted on May 31, 1775, effectively suspended British authority, and established local self-government in North Carolina, which was the first colony to formally do so. It would be over a year later before the U.S. Declaration of Independence was crafted.
A bloody engagement of the American Revolutionary War fought near the border of North and South Carolina, the Battle of the Waxhaws, was fought on the is date (May 29, 1780). It pitted Continental forces under Colonel Abraham Buford against British troops led by Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton and ended in a Patriot defeat known for allegations of captured soldiers being massacred after their surrender. #Celebration250
