I’m so committed to the vacation in the same place every year model. It’s such a treat. Ya the world is big but you’re missing out if you don’t know what it’s like to care about a place, feel at home there, and long to get back there each year. Kids especially thrive with this kind of routine and habit. When I was growing up my family went on the same vacation 15 years in a row, in Wyoming. The summer before I left for college, my brother and I worked there for 10 weeks. It’s expensive but we still go when we can as an extended family. And now that my siblings and I have little kids, we’ve picked a new destination, closer to home, that we return to each year.
That place can stay the same even if you’re normal life changes through a move, job change, or whatever else. Given how transient and fast moving modern life is, and how tenuous our connection is to physical space, experiencing that almost mystical connection to a place that only comes through happy memories accreting and long time spent, is worth not seeing a new corner of the country or world each year
it is an unwritten rule of life that after every prolonged period of hardship and uncertainty, there is going to be a period when you are going to achieve quantum leaps across multiple areas of your life. the only requirement is that you do not give up on yourself.
UPS: “Your package is in your city, on a truck driven by Mike. It will arrive on your doorstep at 6:27pm today.”
FedEx: “Your package is coming. You’ll get it when we get there.”
USPS: “What package?”
Amazon: “We are already inside your apartment. Check the bathroom.”
Facebook: “We know you were thinking about getting a toaster yesterday. Here are 20 ads for toaster ovens.”
I’d argue that once you hit your late 20’s you realize you were practicing adulthood for the last 10 years and it’s not what you really wanted because you probably decided your entire life trajectory before your frontal lobe fully formed and it makes a lot of sense to have the desire to start all over with the knowledge you gained once real adulthood and life experience hit
isn't it funny how we all wanted to be professionals with degrees and high paying jobs but now we just want slow mornings, good coffee and a regulated nervous system
We really need to talk about how doctors will look a 15-year-old girl dead in the face and prescribe her a heavy synthetic hormone that alters her brain chemistry, causes severe depression, and completely flatlines her libido... just because she complained about period cramps or a little bit of acne. We treat birth control like it’s a skincare routine instead of a massive, systemic biological override.
