As a matter of fact, Shaun, back when this was a free country, you could own a raccoon as a pet. One even lived in the White House with Calvin and Grace Coolidge.
In 1926, someone from Mississippi sent a raccoon to the President and First Lady to have for Thanksgiving dinner. Appalled at the idea, the Coolidges decided to keep her as a pet, naming her Rebecca. Though kept on a leash outdoors, Rebecca had free rein of the president’s residence until Calvin and Grace left in 1929. She even had a collar with her name on it.
According to the First Lady, Rebecca’s favorite activity was playing in the bathtub with a bar of soap. The Coolidges would travel with the raccoon (all the way to South Dakota), and she even made appearances at the annual Easter Eggs Roll.
Grace said, “We had a house made for her in one of the large trees, with a wire fence built around it for protection. We kept her chained when out of doors, but in the house she had her liberty. She was a mischievous, inquisitive party and we had to keep watch of her when she was in the house.”
Rebecca the raccoon was given to the Zoo in Washington when the Coolidges left the White House in 1929.
