In a proud moment for Gambian academia and West African science, renowned researcher Dr. Assan Jaye was formally inducted today, Tuesday 29th April 2026, as an Honorary Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Sciences (WAPMLS).
The prestigious recognition celebrates Dr. Jayeโs remarkable 27-year career dedicated to advancing the immunology of HIV-2 and other viral infections. His groundbreaking research has significantly deepened scientific understanding of these diseases across the region. The honor also acknowledges his outstanding mentorship of numerous postgraduate and postdoctoral scientists, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in medical laboratory sciences.
Dr. Jaye expressed deep gratitude: โI am deeply honoredโฆ I share the joy of this honorable day with the West African Laboratory Scientists from Liberia, Senegal, Nigeria and The Gambia who graduated as fellows of WAPMLS.โ
The ceremony highlighted collective academic excellence, with new fellows from across West Africa joining the celebration. Dr. Jayeโs achievement underscores The Gambiaโs growing contribution to global health research and inspires the next generation of African scientists.
