Exciting for OKC! Over 61 years of building up our city & welcoming numerous NCAA championship events... @okcAllSports started the whole thing! The legacy should not be forgotten.
Next week, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament returns to Oklahoma City for the first time in a decade. Some of the most iconic moments in March Madness history have occurred in OKC. Here’s the historic rundown:
1939 - As part of the very first NCAA Tournament, the country was divided into eight districts, and a four-team playoff was held at what we now call the Civic Center Music Hall to decide the representative from District 5. The University of Oklahoma (OU) defeated the school we now call Oklahoma State University (OSU) to advance to the West Regional in San Francisco.
1957 - In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Oklahoma City University (OCU) defeated Loyola of New Orleans at Capitol Hill High School.
1977 - In the only Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games ever played in OKC, the Myriad welcomed Marquette, Kansas State, Wake Forest and Southern Illinois. Marquette emerged and would go on to win the title. This is one of two times that the champion has come through OKC.
1994 - The Myriad welcomed Arkansas, North Carolina A&T, Illinois, Georgetown, UCLA, Tulsa, OSU and New Mexico State for first and second round games. No. 1 seed Arkansas advanced, but more shocking was No. 12 seed Tulsa, who pulled upsets over UCLA and OSU to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Arkansas would go on to win the title.
1998 - The Myriad welcomed Kansas, Prairie View A&M, Rhode Island, Murray State, TCU, Florida State, Ole Miss and Valparaiso for first and second round games. No. 1 seed Kansas was upset in the second round by Rhode Island. No. 13 seed Valpo’s Cinderella run to the Sweet 16 was highlighted by Bryce Drew’s iconic first round buzzer beater over Ole Miss. That shot lives forever in every March Madness highlights package.
2003 - The new Ford Center (now known as Paycom Center) welcomed OU, South Carolina State, Cal, N.C. State, Memphis, Arizona State, Kansas and Utah State for first and second round games. No. 1 seed OU advanced, as did No. 2 seed Kansas, who survived a first round scare from Utah State with a three-point win.
2005 - The Ford Center welcomed Southern Illinois, St. Mary’s, OSU, Southeastern Louisiana, Wisconsin, Northern Iowa, Kansas and Bucknell for first and second round games. OSU and Wisconsin advanced after No. 3 seed Kansas suffered a shocking loss to Bucknell.
2010 - The Ford Center welcomed Kansas, Lehigh, UNLV, Northern Iowa, BYU, Florida, Kansas State and North Texas for first and second round games. No. 2 seed Kansas State advanced with a win over BYU, who won a two-overtime classic over Florida. The other team to advance was Northern Iowa, who recorded a shocking upset over No. 1 Kansas. Kansas has been sent to OKC four times and has survived only once (and almost lost that time as well).
2016 - Chesapeake Energy Arena welcomed Texas, Northern Iowa, Texas A&M, Green Bay, Oregon State, VCU, OU and Cal State Bakersfield for first and second round games. No. 2 seed OU advanced. The other team joining them in the Sweet 16 was Texas A&M, who defeated Northern Iowa in the second round in one of the greatest comebacks in basketball history. Led by Alex Caruso, the Aggies trailed 69-57 with 44 seconds left in regulation, but ultimately won in double overtime.
What madness will ensue this March in OKC?
Today our community broke ground on a grand new entrance to St. Anthony Hospital, made possible in large part due to a donation from the Love Family. This project reflects St. Anthony’s commitment to downtown OKC. (1/3)
