If you don’t think he’s a woman, you’re transphobic. When he claimed to be a woman, he became a woman. He now belongs in women’s changing rooms, bathrooms, hospital wards, prison cells and rape support centres.

If you try and differentiate between him and a trans woman who looks more convincing as a woman, you are promoting patriarchal beauty norms. If you admit to seeing an aggressive and possibly unbalanced man in this video, you’re saying all trans people are mentally ill predators. If you refuse to let him into female-only spaces, you’re removing his right to exist. If you suggest he could comfortably use male facilities, you secretly want him assaulted. If you refuse to call him ‘she’, you are guilty of unpardonable cruelty. If you’re a woman who wouldn’t want to share a locker room with him, or a man who wouldn’t want your daughter, sister or mother to get undressed in close proximity to him, you belong to the far-right. If you point out that there is no objective difference between his claim to be a woman and that of any other biological male claiming a trans identity, you are too stupid to understand the circular arguments explaining why he’s not really trans whereas other men who say they’re women are really trans.

If you’re righteous, you must argue that this man’s self-declared identity overrides any consideration of the safety and rights of females. To be godly, you must agree he’s as ‘valid’ as every other trans woman, because people are who they say they are. No matter what your eyes, ears and common sense are telling you, if you don’t want to end up on the wrong side of history, you must pretend to believe that this angry, intimidating man is actually a vulnerable, oppressed woman.

Turning Point USA is free markets, limited government, and fiscal responsibility. Turning Point USA is freedom of speech, political activism, grassroots humility, and our incredible field program. It is the strong chapters and activists throughout this nation - the ones who receive backlash from school administrations, have speakers uninvited or protested, have grades ruined for standing by our values, and our faces painted in local media. But we don’t care. We continue to fight back. Why? Because we know that what we say and what we believe is truth.

Many activists and chapters have reached out to top employees at headquarters and within the National Organization about Candace Owens’ role at Turning Point USA. We have yet to receive any substantial response. It is unfortunate that this is the manner that we’ve had to resort to, but we can no longer silently wait for things to change. We are Chapters, Presidents, and Leaders of Turning Point USA, and we condemn the rhetoric and role of Candace Owens within our organization.

It seems that controversy has always surrounded Candace Owens, and unfortunately, since her time as Communications Director, those controversies have been a reflection on Turning Point USA. As the Communications Director, she should be furthering advocating for Turning Point USA’s mission, not her own projects or platform. We understand that as an individual, she has the right to express her own thoughts and opinions, though they don’t always necessarily align with Turning Point USA’s mission. However, when she is serving in the capacity of the role that she has, what she says can and will be interpreted by others as a reflection of Turning Point USA.

Most recently, her comments about Hitler and nationalism caused a stir. Was the video cut to make her look like a Hitler supporter? Yes. Do we believe Candace Owens supports the actions of Hitler at home or abroad? No. But this case serves as the perfect demonstration of how simple messages she means to convey become controversial headlining news within a matter of minutes. Again, as the Communications Director, she must know how to communicate professionally and effectively. Understand that when she speaks, Turning Point USA is associated with those comments.

Additionally, there is no problem with condemning the #MeToo movement, but the way in which Candace went about it was tone deaf. It seemed as though she looked at the #MeToo movement as another leftist facade for trying to take down men.

Unfortunately, she entirely missed the mark. For a lot of people, conservatives included, the #MeToo movement was about solidarity with and for victims of sexual assault. When she made her comments, outsiders didn’t just look at it as Candace saying these things, they looked at it as the Communications Director of Turning Point USA saying these things - something that became very evident during last summer’s Young Women’s Leadership Summit.

Turning Point USA is above this thoughtless and divisive rhetoric, and as Chapters, Presidents, and Leaders of Turning Point USA, we will no longer stand idly by as they continue. We do not believe Candace Owens to be the most effective representation for Turning Point USA, as Communications Director or otherwise. We have seen many hard working activists and chapters across the United States dissociate with Turning Point USA simply because they can’t align themselves with the rhetoric and statements that have come out. The core and backbone of Turning Point USA is our chapters and activists. If we are being discouraged, how will Turning Point USA go about fixing this? What will be done?
